The action starts here! Since
we are located in the main harbor of St Thomas, we often have an opportunity to become
involved with major events and fun activities. We enjoyed having the Marriott Frenchman's
Reef International Match Race Regatta based from our marina. Teams from around the world,
many America's Cup contenders, raced aboard J 120's. Excellent weather, and great post
race celebrations were cause for FUN! The Virgin Islands has submitted entry to the next
America's Cup Challenge. It is an exciting time for a small place on the globe. We
enjoy having TEAM CARIBBEAN's practice boat, Stars and Stripes visit from time to
time.
Regattas in the islands are as
popular as Rum Punch !
There's always a race somewhere. From
fun, laid back events such as the Annual Sweethearts Regatta in Tortola that
features oldies but goodies, and I mean yachts! The Annual Coral Bay Thanksgiving
Regatta, where there is a prize for everything - this has been the only race where I
saw contenders vying for last place by hiding in the mangroves, until all others crossed
the finish line. There are benefit regattas, for many charities, and of course the highly
competitive races that you read about in National Publications. Spring time kicks off the
famous CORT SERIES with The Heineken Regatta in St Martin, The BVI Spring
Regatta in Tortola and the ROLEX in St Thomas. It is many a sailor's dream to
go for the gold and win that famous gold watch! Races mean exciting, stimulating times,
with visitors from many countries, yachting professionals and world class racers gracing
our shores.
What's
better than beach volleyball?
Playing in the sand. This great
sand sculpture is definitely worth a big hurrah! We think the creative genius was inspired
by a desire to have FUN!
You'll
find many foods on the islands that you recognize, and many more that you don't. Some look
strange, but beneath the unusual exterior, you may find a real treat. Some favorites are:
UGLI FRUIT -
How can you pass this one up? It looks
like an ugly grapefruit. Peel it and you'll find a succulent fruit.
CHRISTOPHENE - White or pale green, it has flesh
like zucchini, perfect grated raw for salads, and even better boiled and topped with a
white cheese sauce.
SOURSOP - A large irregularly shaped green colored
fruit with a sweet fragrance and makes great ice cream, juice and flavoring for other
dishes.
GUAVA - A small round fruit that islanders sing
about at Christmas time because it is a traditional holiday spirit. The pulp is pinkish,
and makes great jams, jellies and fillings for pies.
GENIPS - Perhaps a favorite, if in season reach up
to a tree pick a few of these small fruits (approx. 3/4" diameter), crack the touch
skin and suck the tart pulp!
SUGAR APPLE - PLANTAIN - PAPAYA - MANGO - PASSION FRUITS
and many more. You'll have an opportunity to sample many on your visit, both fresh and at
our restaurants prepared in many different sauces, and desserts.
